Since 1881 what is now known as Kildonan UnitingCare been an integral part of the social fabric of Victoria.
After the prosperity of the gold rush era diminished, the number of homeless and neglected children rose sharply.
Moved by the despair they saw across Melbourne, two stalwarts of the Presbyterian Church, Miss Selina Sutherland
and Miss Maria Armour established the Scot's Church Neglected Children's Aid Society to provide residential care
for homeless and or neglected children.
Established as Kildonan Child and Family Services the organisation is part of Australia's largest welfare network,
the Uniting Church in Australia. Over the decades, the way in which Kildonan delivers care has developed to reflect
the diverse and changing needs of children, young people and families. Our main emphasis is on family preservation,
prevention of family breakdown and early intervention.
In 2006, Hope Springs and Preston Creative Living Centre merged with Kildonan. The services provided by these
agencies increased the diversity of services offered and strengthened Kildonan's links with local churches.
Our history includes a continual commitment to developing and providing relevant services to those most in need
within the community. Kildonan Child and Family Services is an agency of the Uniting Church in Australia and is
part of the UnitingCare Victoria and Tasmania Network. To reflect and reinforce the strong links this partnership
provides, Kildonan Child and Family Services became known as Kildonan UnitingCare, from July 2007.
